Whether it was predestination or some magnificent accident, I picked up watercolors at a very early age. I grew up on the east coast and had no lack of input from the nature that surrounded me. I started in realism but found it to be too rigid and literal for my exuberant thinking. I stopped painting altogether after having moved to New York City, where I was captivated by music and theatre. This lasted for well more than a decade, including a stint at the now defunct Museum of Holography where I was impressed with artists from around the globe working in light and dimensional imaging.
When I left New York, I moved to Cape Cod and cultivated a career in Broadcasting which spanned several decades. Sound editing is its own artform; a studio setting where music, sound effects and voices can disrobe and become a unified being. It is immensely gratifying and takes great patience and precision to “hear” the nuances that make an elevated visual picture for the listener. I have been fortunate to have received numerous awards and accolades. I am perhaps best known for an award-winning Jazz program which ran on the east coast on Sunday mornings.
While still living on Cape Cod, I semi-retired from Broadcasting and took up painting once again, longing for a medium that was both more freeing and responsive to my now more peaceful and contemplative life. I started back with watercolor but this time chose specifically to explore an abstract vocabulary allowing the flow of water and paint to tell its tale. Some of the work borders on impressionistic. I decided to also take lessons in acrylic painting. I have studied with fine painters and have taken every opportunity to focus on abstract thinking – very much Jazz with color, light and movement.
I have now fully retired in New Mexico with a small in-house studio, my wonderful wife and two cats, both of whom are career criminals. The abstract voice continues to speak to me amid the beauty of the mountains, the high desert and beautiful Rio Grande Valley.
